The Student Art Therapy Organization is an organization that meets monthly to discuss and plan events around campus and the community. We participate in a variety of events and provide art-making opportunities. Our focus is to share art therapy with the campus and community, and discuss professional development and networking. We also understand that graduate school is demanding and stressful— which is why a big part of SATO is providing a community of students who can empathize. Another focus of ours is to reduce stress through art and promote self-care within our field as well as across campus. Anyone can be a member of SATO.
Members enjoy a variety of opportunities to engage with the community through art, develop skills and connections that will benefit them in the professional world, and experience self-care through the creation and sharing of art. Community outreach experiences with SATO can also be eligible to be counted as direct contact hours, which are crucial for Art Therapy graduate students to reach internship hour minimums. These activities provide valuable experience for graduate students looking to engage with diverse populations in their professional career as well as throughout their lives. Membership in SATO can also provide benefits to students looking to attend the annual American Art Therapy Association conferences, where they can connect with other art therapists and catch up on what’s new in the art therapy world.
